You people are ridiculous. I went over and looked at that site and nowhere on it does the guy say or even imply that he uploaded the videos he displays. In fact every one of the player pages I looked at had a link back to the original Archive.org page for that video.

He has nothing for sale there - just free access to streaming videos, with a very easy to navigate site.

To imply that he is somehow stealing from you is ludicrous. As if you "own" any of the stuff you upload. Why do you put your videos on line with embed codes if you don't expect people to display your videos on their sites?

I am glad that I came across this discussion and learned about the "Uncle Earl" site. I work for a Public Access TV station and come to Archive.org to download Public Domain TV shows to use as filler in our schedule. Am I "stealing"? I don't think so, and neither is that guy.

What I like is that he has gone to the trouble to locate all these shows and catalog them. Makes it really easy for me to find and download usable programs for the station. I am grateful too him, and you should be as well, since he's making it easier to find and view your videos.

I was referring to stealing bandwidth. If he's directly linked to this site, then it's this site that has to pay for the bandwidth usage whenever somebody watches one of his videos.

That post sounded like it came from a personal friend of Earlon's. Just a guess. ;)

What several of us found quite annoying if not outright offensive was Earlon's massive spam posting of fake reviews, over 200 in one day I believe, which were in fact nothing but blatant and tasteless plugs for his own website. A real no-class stunt on Earlon's part. He deserved to be called on the carpet for it, and he was.

As you were, skybandit. :)

Stealing bandwidth?? Are you kidding me? You don't get out much do you.

Do you have any idea how many web sites there are out there that stream video off of Archive.org? Dozens, if not hundreds of them. I know because I am always out looking for programs for our station. Most of them carry ads and many sell DVDs - none of them navigate as easily as the site we are talking about, which is completely non-commercial as far as I can tell.

Spamming your Review section was a bonehead stunt but as
I read the posts down the page, the only thing I see that might be illegal in this situation are the calls for people to harass the guy.

I think that IS illegal in several States.

Lots of people spam the Archive here and there, but his spamming was massive and rapid-fire. We asked and eventually demanded that the spamming stop. He deserved to be called on it until he stopped. What was it, 208 spam posts in less than 24 hours? There's no defense for that.

The main problem, other than the spaming, I have with the Uncle Earl site is that it directly reproduces my written text descriptions on my uploads that have been reused, without attribution or permission. The publishing of written text on a page with a public domain item neither dedicates the text to the public domain nor licenses it for redistribution. The terms of service and FAQs on Archive.org suggest that re-users are responsible for seeking clarification on rights associated with the material on the page. Archive.org suggests leaving a review including a question or contacting the up-loader through the forums.

Spaming and blatant disregard for copyright are valid concerns not "ridiculous". Ad to that, the page has ad links connected to the view counter.

Also, by giving out his web domain address (solie.org) in his spam posts, his full contact info became public. All one needed to do was go to any one of many hundreds of WHOIS pages and type in his domain name to get full info. Since he wasn't reponding to appeals on the forum, it was one way to contact him to let him know he was acting out of line, and being "very uncool and quite disrespectful" toward others here.
